Understanding a Flower’s Symbolic Meaning

You’ve likely either given someone flowers or been the recipient of flowers at some point in your life. If you are like many people, though, you may not know the symbolic meaning of the flowers you are giving or receiving.

Roses

  • Red roses are symbolic of deep, passionate love, making them a perfect choice for a spouse or long-time partner but not as good of an option for a new romantic partner.
  • If you are looking for a symbol of friendship, yellow roses are a great option. Since they are also sometimes associated with jealousy, they are not a good choice for a romantic partner.
  • White roses symbolize purity and innocence, making them a popular choice for wedding bouquets. Since they also symbolize a new beginning, they are a great choice for a new romantic partner.
  • Mystery and uniqueness are symbolized by blue roses, making them a good option for that person who is mysterious and one-of-a-kind.

Sunflowers

The sunflower holds a lot of symbolic meaning. For example, the strong upright stem is said to represent loyalty and a strong bond between two people. This makes sunflowers a great gift to give to someone who has stood by you and supported you through difficult times. They also represent good luck and lasting happiness, so they are a great flower to give a friend or loved one who is starting a new job.

Carnations

  • Much like their rose counterparts, deep red carnations represent deep love. Along with that, they symbolize admiration.
  • White carnations are a symbol of pure love and good luck, making them a great flower choice when you want to wish a dear friend or family member luck.
  • When you’re feeling disappointed or rejected, yellow carnations are a symbol of your feelings.
