Kids Have Fun Learning With These Inexpensive Art Ideas
Looking for ways to spend your free time with the kids? Here are two fun and creative activities you can do at home with items you may already have on hand.
An oldie, but a goodie: making tie dye shirts is a unique craft because it creates something you can use over and over again. How often can your child say that they can wear their art?
Tie dying is a fun project that requires a white t-shirt, some rubber bands, food coloring and your imagination. Just mix together a few drops of food coloring with equal amounts of water and vinegar– if you don’t have vinegar, water is just fine–to make your desired color. Next, take your rubber bands and bunch up the parts of the t-shirt you want to color. Then dip just that part of the t-shirt into your color mixture. The longer you leave it in, the brighter the color. When you are finished, undo the rubber bands and let the t-shirt dry, then wash it separately for its first wash in case the colors run.
Want to take your tie dying up a notch? Try the art of batiking. This technique was developed in Indonesia and like tie dying you can use the same techniques to dye the fabrics but instead of using rubber bands to create colorful patterns, sections of the cloth are covered with hot wax to create designs. For this, you can simply use the wax from an everyday candle. For more information on this colorful art form and to see examples of batiking, checkout the Batik Guild’s website.
Being creative is a great way to use a different part of your brain that you don’t get to tap into on a regular basis. Projects like tie dying and batiking also make great gifts for family and friends. Consumers’ Choice Award Winner Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy provides kids with great opportunities like these for hands on learning and exploring.
