It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Time To Get CyberSmart and Do Your Part

It’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and for 2021, the theme is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.” Since 2004, cybersecurity awareness tips and information have been shared each October, to spread an understanding of each person’s role in being cybersmart.

Why Cybersecurity is Crucial

Society’s dependence upon the internet has led to people and organizations being more susceptible to online threats than ever before. To be better protected, it’s crucial to become educated in the cybercrime tactics used by criminals and how a user can defend themselves.

Cybercriminals are skilled in what they do; it’s their job. Their success depends upon the targeted user’s lack of cyber-awareness. Relying solely on manual avoidance of online threats can be dangerous, as it leaves too much room for human error.

For example, an individual may be trying to complete a project before the deadline, and may not pause to think before clicking a link in an unexpected email. That one click could open the door for cybercriminals to make their way into your network.

Being cybersmart includes steps such as

  • Following best password practices (strong & varied)
  • Keeping software up to date
  • Understanding phishing and ensuring you think before you click
  • Enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) when logging in
