5 Budget-Conscious Tips to Keep Your Teeth in Tip-Top Shape
Posted on June 5, 2013

To get ready for summer, some of us head to the gym; others head to the tanning salon, but don’t forget your most important feature, your smile!

A brilliant smile can make all the difference. It can lift you up, give you confidence, and make you feel like a new person. You might even muster up the courage to smile at a good-looking stranger. Wait, did they just wink at you?

You’re probably thinking, “Sure, but tooth whitening treatments may be expensive!” We understand. Luckily, we’ve put together a list of 5 Tips to Keep Your Teeth in Tip-Top Shape.

1. Baking Soda

It may sound odd, but baking soda was used to clean teeth for centuries. Its slightly abrasive quality makes it the perfect texture to remove tooth stains without damaging your enamel. Just dip a wet toothbrush into it, and brush away. It will polish and whiten your teeth in no time.

2. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is highly acidic, which is good to remove tooth stains, and kill any harmful bacteria that may be residing in your mouth. Pour a few drops into the baking soda and mix to make a paste. Brush your teeth with it for 2 minutes and rinse well.

3. Floss

You’ve heard it from your dentist a million times, and with good reason. Flossing is super important to keep your teeth healthy. Bacteria in your mouth like to feed on the food that gets stuck between your teeth, and they excrete a harmful acid that causes tooth decay. Grossed out yet? Good. Go floss!

4. Fluoride Mouth Rinse

Surprisingly, regular mouthwash does little to restore tooth enamel. It kills bacteria, but it does nothing to fix the harm that’s already been done. This is easily remedied by simply swishing a capful of fluoride mouth rinse after you brush. They sell it right next to the mouthwash, just read the label.

5. Easy on Those Gums

You may feel like you’re doing a better job when you brush like a crazy person. This is not the case. When you brush hard, all you’re doing is damaging your gums, which can lead to the dreaded gingivitis. No one wants to kiss someone with bleeding gums. Be gentle. Your teeth will be clean, and your gums will thank you.

With these simple steps, you’re well on your way to a fresh, kissable mouth. There’s a lot more to having a beautiful smile than just white teeth, they need to be healthy too. You don’t have to break the bank to have gorgeous teeth for the rest of your life.
